CPE is an experience-based approach to learning spiritual care, which combines pastoral care with qualified supervision and group reflection. Supervised encounters with those in crisis help students develop their competence in meeting the needs of others, including congregational and institutional settings, regardless of faith tradition.

Program Details

Our CPE program trains theology students and ordained ministers in pastoral and counseling skills through instruction, mentorship, and clinical experience in healthcare settings.

Clinical pastoral (Hospital Chaplaincy) education (CPE) is multifaith professional education intended to assist ordained ministers/clergy and theological students to develop a spiritual care identity as well appropriate skills in the delivery of spiritual care.

CPE is the primary method of training hospital chaplains and spiritual care providers. CPE is an experience-based approach to learning spiritual care, which combines pastoral care with qualified supervision and group reflection. Supervised encounters with those in crisis help students develop their competence in meeting the needs of others, including congregational and institutional settings, regardless of faith tradition.

The program is open to ordained Christian ministers/clergy (irrespective of their denominations) and theology students. It aims to assist people in achieving their full potential for spiritual care provision.

  • Graduation certificate or admission letter from a theological institution
  • Senior secondary school certificate from WAEC and/or NECO with credit level passes in at least four subjects, including English language, Christian Religion Studies, and Biology in not more than two sittings

A Graduation Certificate from Marjorie Bash College of Health Sciences and Technology will be issued, upon completion of this program. Graduates will receive a badge as a Certified Hospital Chaplain from the College, including a registration number. The program was developed with input from Lifeline Chaplaincy (Texas, USA) and Harding School of Theology (Memphis, USA). There are ongoing efforts to collaborate with other accreditation agencies and similar programs within and outside Nigeria.

Learning Objectives


This blended learning (online and classroom) program will be delivered by faculty that includes nurses, Ordained Ministers, Psychologists and Social Workers. The content will cover the following areas:

  • First Aid and Medical Terminology,
  • Medical Ethics and Leadership in Spiritual Care,
  • Foundations and Practice of Chaplaincy,
  • Psychological crisis and trauma.
  • Mental health management
  • Chaplaincy & spiritual care practice – extending the mission of the church
  • Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Practicum
