Health/Continuing Care Assistant (HCA)
Overview
Health/Continuing Care Assistants (HCAs) are the eyes and ears of the frail and vulnerable. HCAs, also called health care aides, have employment opportunities in a variety of settings, including hospitals and care homes. They support patients with ambulation, meal assistance/nutrition, personal care (bathing, toileting, dressing and grooming), medication monitoring, communication, and end-of-life care. They work directly with clients across the lifespan who have a variety of health care needs and you’ll become an important and respected member of the healthcare team.
The Health/Continuing Care Assistant program provides knowledge and skill development in helping people to help themselves in their homes and special care facilities. You will receive training in: gerontology, dementia management strategies, applying the philosophy of long-term care into home care, special care and community settings, promoting independence in a safe environment, working with people from all cultures, working with individuals with different levels of physical and cognitive impairment, giving personal care, and attending to psychosocial needs.
